Applying for an LOA
Part 91 operators applying for oceanic RNP (B036) or NAT HLA (B039) show how their crews were trained. The course covers the subjects the FAA lists for both and ends with a certificate of training.
Operational ground training for oceanic and remote continental flying, oceanic RNP and the North Atlantic High Level Airspace, for pilots and Part 91 operators of any long-range aircraft. 22 lessons, about 4 hours, follow a crossing: the rules and approvals, navigation performance, planning, the oceanic clearance, the crossing, contingencies, and polar and remote operations. It covers the 56 ground and procedural training subjects the FAA lists for LOAs B036 (oceanic RNP) and B039 (NAT HLA) and ends with a certificate of training.
Built on the FAA's lists of oceanic, RNP and procedural training subjects, and taught by doing, recalling and deciding in short sessions on your phone or computer.
The course covers the 56 ground and procedural training subjects the FAA lists for LOAs B036 and B039: 19 oceanic and remote continental subjects from AC 91-70, and 20 RNP subjects and 17 procedural training tasks from AC 90-105. Here is each one, in short, with the lessons that teach it.
Short lessons in 7 parts. The first lessons are a free preview; once you have the course, take the rest in any order.
Oceanic and remote airspace, whose rules apply, and the LOAs
RNP specifications, long-range navigation systems and the FMS
Publications, weather, the flight plan, ETPs and the North Atlantic
Preflight, the clearance, and talking over the ocean
Offsets, cross-checks, errors and coast-in
Contingencies, navigation and communication failures, survival
Magnetic unreliability, polar and remote continental operations
Written from public sources: FAA AC 91-70D, Oceanic and Remote Continental Airspace Operations (3 Apr 2025); FAA AC 90-105A, Approval Guidance for RNP Operations (7 Mar 2016, editorial update 2); FAA Notice N 8900.756 (30 Dec 2025): LOAs B036 and B039 revised, B054 retired; FAA Oceanic and High Remote Continental Application Guide for Part 91 Operators v2.1 (13 Oct 2026); FAA AC 135-42, Appendix 3 (polar operations); ICAO NAT Doc 007, North Atlantic Operations and Airspace Manual, V.2026-1; EASA Easy Access Rules for Air Operations, Revision 24 (March 2026).

First time over the ocean, or the first in a while? Learn the planning, the clearance, the position reports and the contingencies before you go.
Areas of magnetic unreliability, polar checklists and remote continental operations, with the polar guidance AC 91-70D recommends to Part 91 operators.
Finish every lesson, confirm that you did them yourself, and download a certificate of training as a PDF. It lists the subjects with the lessons that teach each one, and carries its own number and QR code: anyone, such as your operator, can check it at typerating.aero/verify/ with the number and your last name.
With the certificate comes a one-page procedures quick reference, also a PDF made out to you, with graphics. It covers where the NAT HLA applies, the strategic lateral offset, the contingency procedure, weather deviations, communication and navigation failures, diversion and ETPs. It is a training summary to print or keep on your tablet; the regulations, the AIPs and your operator's procedures govern.
From six months after your certificate, while you have access to the course, a refresher check of 30 questions from across the course, with the questions added since your certificate first, gives you a certificate of refresher training with its own number and date, verifiable like the first.
Covers every ground and procedural training subject the FAA lists for LOAs B036 (oceanic RNP) and B039 (NAT HLA). Your certificate of training documents completion of the course; whether it counts toward an LOA is decided by the FAA, which may review the course. The course is not FAA-approved.
The procedural training tasks are taught on a generic FMS: what to do, when and why, and what to check. The button presses on your FMS come from your operator's procedures and the manufacturer's guide.

Yes. The Oceanic & NAT HLA course in our Ground School app at app.typerating.aero is operational ground training for oceanic and remote continental operations, oceanic RNP and the North Atlantic High Level Airspace, for any long-range aircraft: 22 lessons, about 4 hours, with interactive diagrams, a numbers blitz, a mock oral and a mock written check. It covers the 56 ground and procedural training subjects the FAA lists for LOAs B036 (oceanic RNP) and B039 (NAT HLA) and ends with a certificate of training.
Since FAA Notice N 8900.756 (30 December 2025), B036 is Oceanic RNP Operations: it is required to show oceanic RNP (RNP 10, RNP 4 or RNP 2) on the flight plan and to fly where oceanic RNP is required, and recommended for other Part 91 oceanic flights. It also covers airplanes with a single long-range navigation system, which used to need LOA B054. B039 authorizes Part 91 flights in the North Atlantic High Level Airspace, FL 285 to FL 420, and needs B036 as well unless the flights are limited to the Iceland–Greenland Corridor.
The 19 oceanic and remote continental subjects of AC 91-70, and the 20 RNP subjects and 17 procedural training tasks of AC 90-105, as the FAA lists them for LOAs B036 and B039. The lessons follow a crossing: rules and approvals; navigation performance; planning the crossing; to the oceanic boundary; the crossing; when things go wrong; polar, remote and the numbers.
Your certificate of training documents completion of the course and lists the subjects it covers. Whether it counts toward an LOA is decided by the FAA, which may review the course. The course is not FAA-approved.
It teaches every procedural training task, such as checking the navigation database, initializing the position, loading and verifying the route, direct-to, intercepts, discontinuities, offsets and the RNP value, on a generic FMS: what to do, when and why, and what to check. The button presses on your FMS come from your operator's procedures and the manufacturer's guide.
Yes. It covers the NAT HLA, the organized track system, the data link mandate and the PBCS tracks, the corridors, oceanic clearances and position reports, CPDLC, ADS-C, SATVOICE and HF, the strategic lateral offset procedure (SLOP), the oceanic contingency and weather deviation procedures, and communication failure.
No. It is not FAA-approved training or an authorization. It covers the ground and procedural training subjects the FAA lists for LOAs B036 and B039, and whether and how it counts toward an authorization is decided by the operator and the FAA, which may review the course first.
$199 for 12 months, one payment that does not renew, or $277 for Oceanic & NAT HLA and RVSM together, 12 months each, in one payment. International courses are sold for 12 months only.
